OHL and CIS Experience

Kelly played 2 seasons as a Defenseman for the London Knights of the OHL. From there, he was heavily recruited by both Universities and Minor Professional Teams.

Kelly decided on the University of New Brunswick (CIAU) where he was coached and developed by Mike Johnston (Former Associate Coach of the LA Kings-NHL). In just 3 seasons at UNB, he won 2 Division Championships and was named:

  • 2 time league All Star
  • Top Defenseman
  • All Canadian Rookie Team selection
  • University Sports Rookie of the Year
  • Currently 3rd All Time in career Assists.

Toward the end of his university career, Kelly was invited to the final/main camp of the Canadian National Team in Calgary, where he appeared in evaluation games against the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.

Pro Experience in Europe

Kelly Reed
This experience propelled Kelly to a very successful professional career in Europe where he played in the First Division in Austria, England and Germany. Kelly’s smooth skating and strong technical skills proved to be a great fit for the European game.

In his 5 years in Europe, Kelly’s teams won 2 league championships and 2 major tournaments. Personally, Kelly won numerous individual awards and accolades, including:

  • Coaches Player of the Year in the British National League
  • Rated Best Player in the German 1st League by German ‘Eishockey News’ coaches panel
  • 3 times League Top Defenseman
  • 4 times League All Star
  • Tournament MVP
  • All Decade First Team All Star

Kelly’s Return to Hamilton

Real McCoysUpon his return to the Hamilton area, from Europe, he starred for the Dundas Real McCoy’s of the Ontario Senior AAA league.

He helped lead Dundas to 3 consecutive Ontario Championships and 2 Allan Cup appearances during his 3 seasons. He also was League Top Defenseman, All Star, Runner-Up League MVP and Tournament All Star during his short time with the Real McCoy’s.
